The History of Hilton Head Island: It All Started Here
Port Royal Plantation’s history goes back several centuries. Its shoreline earned a place in history when Captain William Hilton arrived here first in 1663. The Island received its name after this explorer.
The current Port Royal Plantation was under the occupation of Confederate forces at the beginning of the Civil War. The invading Union forces drove out the people of this area, and set up a significant Union military base, as well as an entire town. More people, 50,000, lived here in 1864 than live on the entire Island today. The Steam Gun, the Beach House and Fort Walker Park in the area tell the tale of various historic events that occurred here and in the surrounding waters.

One of the unique amenities available at the community is the oceanfront Beach House, the only oceanfront park and pool complex that is totally private—no tourists allowed! The residents of the community can also reserve the pavilion to host their own private parties.
For tennis enthusiasts there are four private courts. And nature lovers can enjoy the Arboretum where the pathways are marked and native plants are identified. The beaches in the area are conveniently accessible from any of the 19 beach walks and from the Beach House. Just outside the gate is the Port Royal Golf Club with three courses and a beautiful Southern plantation-style clubhouse. Port Royal Plantation owners have the option of joining the Club with one of the courses reserved as private for members only. Historic sites abound in the area.
